Visionary designer, Matthew Christopher’s love and admiration of fashion have manifested a celebrated career in the world of bridal couture—the one facet of the industry that still spotlights the glamour and dimension of love, celebrating something that is pure and timeless.
As a boy raised on an Iowa pig farm, Matthew Christopher was more likely to pick corn than pick fine Italian silk to create couture gowns. But, enthralled by fashion, Matthew began grabbing glamour magazines in the local grocery store. Inspired by what he saw, he began to sew with his grandmothers and neighbor for 4-H. His work began to consistently win blue ribbons in local fairs.
And then there was the visit with a female friend to pick out her prom gown. “I went with her to this bridal shop and met Lou Miller, and we just hit it off. She became my mentor,” he said. That was during his sophomore year of high school – around the same time, he says, he got into the designing aspect of fashion. “I knew I wanted to do bridal. That was easy — it was always bridal designs.”
After studying fashion design at the Ray Vogue College of Design, now known as the Art Institute of Chicago and Iowa State University, he struck out to make a name for himself in New York City.
Matthew’s began his career at Demetrios Bridal as an intern under the guidance of Jimmy Elias. He was then offered an internship at Vera Wang, but chose instead to gain more hands-on expertise as an assistant designer at One of a Kind Bridal, working for Candice Solomon.
Next, he accepted a position as designer at Galina Bridal. Matthew worked alongside Martha Barbour, a Galina patternmaker and designer with nearly 30 years’ experience working with such famous bridal designers as Lazaro, Jim Hjelm, Christos, Judd Waddell, and Frank Masandrea just to name a few. Matthew is proud to be counted in the line of premier bridal designers who got their start at Galina.
Ms. Barbour and Matthew created the 16 dresses in the Spring Galina collection. By infusing a modern, contemporary approach to Galina’s existing look, Matthew was credited with rejuvenating the brand. His designs were among those featured in print advertising in Modern Bride and other major bridal publications, which lead to design opportunities with Casablanca Bridal and Watters & Watters.
While at Watters & Watters, Matthew created seven top-selling dresses for the company, three of which were included in the Spring collection. The gowns were presented in Brides, Modern Brides, and Martha Stewart Weddings advertisements. Finally, Matthew moved to Casablanca Bridal, where he once again was responsible for creating many of the most popular designs for that year.
In 2002, with this wealth of experience and an established reputation for success, he founded his own label, Matthew Christopher Inc. For the past 12 years, Matthew’s gowns have featured modern elegance combined with classic glamour. From hand-drawn, organic beading to show stopping silhouettes, Matthew creates drama in every detail. He is the face of his company, owner, designer, and CEO.
Matthew Christopher Couture is sold across the United States in over 50 top bridal salons. And most recently, Nordstrom chose Matthew Christopher to be one of only four bridal designers featured in their new Couture Bridal section.

Matthew believes in the importance of staying connected with his brides. He travels extensively to trunk shows every year, reaching out to personally meet as many brides as possible. His greatest joy is creating lasting relationships with his customers, sharing in the joyful preparation for their big day. “Their stories have inspired my designs,” said Matthew. “The excitement in a bride’s eyes the moment she sees herself wearing the gown of her dreams is matched by my own.”
Matthew Christopher has been consistently recognized as a top couture bridal wear designer. He has been nominated five times for the industry’s highest honor: the Distinctive Excellence in the Bridal Industry (DEBI) award in the prestigious Designer of the Year category, three times for Distinctive Newcomer, and once in the Style Innovator category.
Matthew Christopher’s ad campaigns differentiate him from the competition with creativity and humor. In recent years, he has showcased his gowns while recreating scenes from classic films like Singing in the Rain, featuring 60’s style “Mad Men” influences, and high-glamour scenes straight out of Old Hollywood.

Matthew Christopher gowns are featured on multiple of episodes of popular TV shows “Randy to the Rescue,” “Say Yes to the Dress,” and “My Fair Wedding” with David Tutera. Matthew’s best-selling gown ‘Josephine’ was also featured in the movie You Again, with Sigourney Weaver, Betty White, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kristin Bell, and Kristin Chenoweth.
Celebrities believe in the glamour of Matthew Christopher gowns for the Red Carpet. Matthew most recently dressed Emmy and Tony Award Winner Kristin Chenoweth, in May 2014, at Carnegie Hall for her first time sold out debut since 2004.
